If you’ve been following this blog for a while, you know that I love traveling and experiencing new places. Which is exactly why I think we should raise a glass to the mini trip.
Finding the inspiration to ramble off on a spur-of-the-moment excursion can sometimes be difficult. If you have a tight schedule, it is probably tempting to just keep your vacation time for something justifiable, like a cruise or a week in a National Park. But I find taking a little time here and there more often can make us feel more rested, less stressed, and potentially even lead to more memorable takeaways than what we’ll find on bigger trips. And so, let’s get into the general parameters when planning the perfect mini trip.

the five essentials to the perfect mini trip
- Number Of Days
- Mini trips are 3-4 days (2-3 nights) PERIOD. Once you start itching closer to that weeklong adventure, you’re really getting into a standard trip.
- Distance From Home
- If you’re driving for half the day or more, you’re eating into the short window of the overall timeframe. So really try to keep the destination within a 1–4-hour drive or 2.5-hour flight (however, avoid flights all together if you can).
- Spontaneity Level: HIGH
- Keep it light-hearted. Don’t bombard your schedule with a lot of To-Do’s and reservations. Instead try to go with whatever feels right. Imagine this excursion as a series of stolen moments, founded in the beauty of being present.
- Group Size: SMALL-MEDIUM
- Traveling in a small group (4) is an easy way to make sure everyone has a great time. It doesn’t take too many people for personal intricacies to clash and make for a sour experience. If you’re planning a bachelorette weekend or something similar, you’re in a completely separate category from the mini trip.
- Indulge. Indulge. Indulge.
- Whatever that means to you, go for it. Mini trips should be all about packing a punch in the short amount of time you have. This could be anything from upgrading a massage package to splurging on a 10th pair of sunglasses to hiking the most scenic peak to renting that jet ski for the entire day. Embrace your own experience so you can go home feeling excited.

Living a life that feels luxurious, living your best life, is all about incorporating the sweetness of life into your regular routine as often as possible.
Vacations don’t have to be reserved for two weeks out of the year, they don’t have to revolve around what your neighbors are doing, they don’t even have to be planned out! Vacations can be a weekend in the next town over and, as long as they leave you with a sense of self-respect and peace, they’ve served their purpose.
Be creative and enjoy the journey!
