fire, water, & you

The art of sauna goes back thousands of years, and research shows that act of sweating for physiological and psychological benefit has been intertwined in ancient cultures from every continent.

I grew up with an understanding of sauna, as my dad would “light her up” every Sunday afternoon as a post-workout gathering of sorts. Actually, as a kid I really disliked the whole experience… it was hard to breath with all of the steam he would pour over the giant JØtul stove, and after becoming absolutely saturated in sweat, we would sit in the stream outside, which in the New Hampshire winter would often be completely frozen over… yikes. But my dad and his ski, trail run, and bike buddies loved filling the entire afternoon yo-yoing themselves between 220°F and 40°F.

As an adult, I too have grown to love the experience of sauna. It is so multifaceted, from the laundry list of biologic health benefits to the sense of comradery and bonding when “suffering” as a group to the meditative introspection that happens when sauna-ing alone. Sauna is such a baseline form of self-care, and allows us to fully appreciate, celebrate, and exercise the body and mind in a beautifully unified way. As you journey between actual fire and water, you have the opportunity to acknowledge the very natural connection you uniquely have the fundamentals of life… plus it’s fun.

With all of the distractions buzzing around these days, finding the time and motivation to literally cook yourself is a feat in itself. Whether you’re prepping for your first sauna ever, or you’ve been raisin-ing yourself for years, appreciate your willingness to prioritize what makes you whole and human.
